In the spring of 2008, car wash workers throughout Los Angeles formed the Carwash Workers Organizing Committee of the United Steelworkers (USW), a precursor to eventual plans to unionize the informal workers of a multi-million dollar industry rampant with exploitation. Most of these workers are undocumented migrants from Central America whose aspirations have led them to washing cars in the city of angels. This experimental documentary, shot on Super 8 film, journeys into a city defined by as much by cars as it is immigrant labor to offer a quiet commentary on the relationship between class, place, and work.

When an aspiring journalist hears rumours of a tumble-drier cult on campus, he launches an investigation that quickly snowballs into a social phenomenon. Based on a true story.

"The Wash is a portrait of the river wash that runs behind the older part of Newhall, California, where Lee and I used to live. We shot the wash on Super8 film and then finished it on video. It is a collaboration between us, describing the ways the wash is used, and the people who use it, ourselves included. It charts the way this land has changed since they began developing Newhall and the surrounding community of Valencia for housing, a development that is expected to bring over 250,000 more people into the area by the year 2015."

During the time it takes for their vehicle to go through the car wash, a couple stands outside, exchanging some apparently harmless dialogue. Once the car is through the wash, we see them get back into the car, where their daughter had remained, and leave. We then understand that they will seperate.

Mako is a neglectful husband. Not the most loving man. His wife gradually encounters a widower who is a kind, gentle figure. She eventually makes the transition to leave her husband and go to this fellow.

The film follows Sara, an Iranian-Italian immigrant in London, through her daily struggle at a desolate car wash. Amidst mundane routines and fleeting encounters, Sara's inner dream of becoming a professional dancer yearns for expression.

An elderly woman (Edith Ivey) visits the local car wash and lube to connect with the world closing in around her.
